Our Services HEAVY MECHANICAL WORKSHOP Vogue Project 1976 Scammell Crusader. Forest Freighters began as a family business in 1976, with the buy of two logging trucks and commenced a contract with Ellis and Burnand Sawmill based in Putaruru. The route led through Arapuni across the dam, then down to the worn saw milling town of Ngaroma, continuing across to Otorohanga to Oliver Transport Yard for morning tea and a chance to view Marty Graves’ collection of scratch built model trucks of days gone by. On Saturday 23 rd March the New Zealand Timber Museum was the meeting deposit for 30 trucks and over 55 visitors to the town to gather, traveling from as far afield as Australia, Whangarei, Devin and all parts between. In 1998 a local forestry company was looking for more stable transport for their machinery in the Kinleith forests, and the decision was made to add a heavy haulage transporter to the fleet.
From Pirongia the route led back towards Te Awamutu and to the back of Cambridge to Paul Garland’s 1877 house and collection of tractors and crawlers. Look forward to seeing you there! In November 2006 the 1942 GM truck was brought to our workshop to be restored to its ingenious condition. The Forest Freighters Group of Companies provides a range of services to the Forestry, Road Haulage, Compressed Mechanical and Safety Industries from our base in Putaruru. The New Zealand Timber Museum was again the meeting store on Sunday with a BBQ Breakfast.
